Hub Motors in a electric bicycle
13th Jul 2008
What is a hub motor?
A hub motor is a motor that gets laced into the middle of a bike wheel. The axle of the hub motor then gets secure to the bikes front forks or rear dropouts, and when power is provided to the hub motor it spins the wheel around the axle, driving the bike forward.
What are the benefits of the hub motor?
Benefits of the hub motor include:
- Hub motor is virtually silent
- Brushless hub motor design provides for a peak efficiency rating of around 85%. This equates to a range of around 50KLM with a 14AH 36V SLA battery pack (with nominal pedal assist)
- Gearless hub motor design means there are no gears to grease, friction, etc. This results in a more reliable, efficient and trouble free riding experience
Hub motors require no inefficent drive chains, belts etc.
